DIY Ornaments – Salt Dough

Recipe by Such a fun DIY gift, AND a great way to preserve your child's creative abilities! We love gathering around the table to make these each year! By HannaSteelman

  • 4 c. flour
  • 1 c. salt
  • ½ T. cinnamon
  • 1 ½ c. warm water
  • Silpat
  • perforated baking sheet
  • Roul'pat
  • wire cutters, optional
  • paperclip, optional

Preheat oven to 300 degrees. Place Silpat on perforated baking sheet. In a stainless mixing bowl, combine flour and salt; stir well. Gradually add water, stirring with a spatula. Finish mixing with hands until soft and pliable. Roll dough on Roul'pat until dough is about 1/8 inch thick. *Cut shapes with cookie cutters, then transfer to Silpat. With a toothpick make a hole in the top of the ornament for threading string OR press in a small curved end of a paperclip (my favorite). Bake until hard, usually about 1 hour. Decorate with paint and varnish or Mod Podge to preserve.*Alternatively, Flexipan trays and molds can be used to create great shapes and free-forming is always fun!! Holes can be easily drilled into finished ornaments, if needed.
