Irish Soda Bread

Recipe by Simple and delicious traditional Irish Soda Bread! Fabulous with your Irish dishes or with any of your meals! Adapted for Demarle use from AllRecipes.com.


  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 4 TB white sugar
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 TB baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 c margarine, softened
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 cup butter, melted
  • 1/4 cup buttermilk


Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Place Silpain (or Silpat, etc) on Perforated Baking Sheet and set aside. In large bowl, mix together flour, sugar, baking soda, baking powder, salt, and margarine. Stir in 1 cup of buttermilk and egg. Turn dough out on to Roulpat and knead slightly. Form dough into a round ball and place on Silpain. In a small bowl, combined melted butter and 1/4 cup buttermilk. Using pastry brush, brush loaf with the butter/buttermilk mixture. Use a sharp knife to cut an "X" into the top of the loaf. Bake in preheated over until a toothpick inserted in the center of the loaf comes out clean, 45-50 minutes. Check for doneness after 30 minutes. You may continue to brush the loaf with the butter mixture while it bakes.
