Demarle at Home is a true family

Karen Walter Gold Chef

We had just finished dessert and were relaxing in my friend’s living room when Leslie Lockwood pulled out a Flexipan® and said “I think I’m going to sell this product. I’d be the first Rep. for Demarle at Home in the state of Oregon. Could you look at the catalog and tell me what you think?"

Introduction to Demarle at Home

After glancing through the catalog I said “those pans are a little pricy. I can’t imagine how they work but if it interests you, you should try it. Try to sponsor Reps. right away. That is the key to being successful.” Because of my previous direct sales experience I knew Leslie had a golden opportunity in front of her. She could definitely earn a full-time income selling Demarle at Home products and building a team. I myself, was not interested in the product. I didn‘t think anyone would buy a product that was so “floppy” and expensive.

Over the following months Leslie and I would see one another regularly. Leslie “just happened” to show me the company newsletter. I remember finding the recognition section first. I wanted to know who was selling the most, who was sponsoring the most, and who was building leaders. Seeds were being planted in my mind. I have another friend that was with us that January evening also encouraging me to sell Demarle. She would tell me I’d be great at it, and that she loved the products. Meanwhile, Leslie continued to invite me to attend one of her Cooking Workshop parties but my schedule never allowed it. I remember sometime in June, the excitement in Leslie’s voice when she tell me her and Bob were going to Paris on their first incentive trip. Within a week of their return I was looking through her pictures and was struck by how small the company was. I thought “WOW”, she actually knows the President and Vice President, she isn’t just a number. The opportunity to build a big business flowed through my mind, and I was now looking for a way to earn extra income for our family. Once I had my questions answered I knew I wanted to give this business a try.

Launching my Business

It was a crazy time of year for me to begin a business. We were about to leave on a two week vacation and school would be starting soon, life was busy. The timing of my start up didn’t deter me because I was so excited to begin my business. I sent in my representative application and met with Leslie over lunch for an hour of training. I needed to know “what do I cook first, what do I say about the product?”. Shortly afterwards I left for a planned road-trip to California. I knew I had to share Demarle with friends in the Bay Area. I did three back-to-back Cooking Workshops during the trip. At one of the Cooking Workshops a woman said “I want to sign up to be a Rep.” I knew this was going to be different than my previous direct sales experience because no one had ever responded like that! Guests were amazed at the products and had fun at the Cooking Workshop. I came home from California with 2 Reps. signed up and I had earned my Quick Start 1. I was on my way to building my business.

Travel

The company incentive trips have given my husband and I the opportunity to travel to places we’ve never been; the Carribean on two occasions and Mauï, Hawaï. In addition to giving us an annual week away, (one friend said “you’re going on another tropical vacation with your husband?”) we have both made lasting friendships with other couples. The camaraderie that builds from year to year on these trips has given us many memorable moments.

My Demarle at Home business has been a financial blessing for our family. In the past year we have been able to complete a huge backyard landscaping project and remodel a bedroom for our son. Our lives have been enriched by vacations with our kids to Washington, D.C., and a horseback trip through Oregon’s Wallowa Mountains. My Demarle income provides tuition for private Middle School and High School plus orthodontics for our children. We have a saying around our house whenever we are saving money for something, it’s “GO DEMARLE”.

Demarle at Home & my Family

Demarle at Home is a truly family. One of the aspects that drew me to the company was the size. I wanted to be part of a company were I would know the President and other officers of the company and would have a voice. We have fun together. Laughter along with sharing the ups and downs in the business has formed deep friendships among my team of leaders and Reps. I am thankful these women and men are part of my life. Over the years I have met incredible people who have served as hosts for my Demarle Cooking Workshops. I like spending time in their homes and getting acquainted with them. Many end becoming friends who enrich my life.

Flexibility & Growth

I have often said that flexibility is worth more than money. Working my own hours was essential for me when looking for a way to earn extra money. I had always planned to be a stay-at-home mom. Kids in daycare while I worked an 8-5 job were not for our family. Demarle gives me the flexibility to be home with our kids after school, volunteer in their classrooms, or meet a friend for a walk on a beautiful autumn day. I can look at my calendar and decide when I’m working and how frequently. I like being my own boss.

I eagerly anticipate the growth of our company. Someday we will have 70,000+ representatives in the United States and every home will have a Silpat®. The income from my business will fund our children’s college educations and finish remodeling our 100-year-old house. My husband likes to jokingly ask me, (I think he’s half-serious) “So, when do I get to retire?” What was my response? “Give me business a few more years, and then we’ll have that cabin on a lake to retire in”.
